Developed by Euroscut Azores, the ecological management project for the green areas surrounding concession-operated roads proposes a new approach to road infrastructure maintenance, replacing intensive mowing and invasive species control practices with solutions based on the natural regeneration of ecosystems. With interventions in more than 160 hectares, the initiative incorporates green and environmental engineering principles, promotes the use of native plants and more efficient management of resources such as water and energy, while also helping to reduce workplace hazards associated with work on slopes.
More than just ensuring the maintenance of green spaces, the project aims to transform road corridors into spaces for ecological restoration and promotion of biodiversity, reducing the environmental impacts of operations and enhancing local ecosystems. Through the in-house production of native plants, nature conservation partnerships, and knowledge sharing, the initiative demonstrates how transportation infrastructure can actively contribute to sustainability goals through solutions that can be replicated in other highway and urban contexts.
